Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ll know that Black Panther is set for release on 13th February in the UK. While the critically-acclaimed Marvel epic boasts a star-studded cast including Michael B Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o and Angela Bassett, it also holds another little gem in the form of talented actress Florence Kasumba.
Director Ryan Coogler led his fleet of a-list stars to Black Panther’s UK premiere on 8th February, hosted at London’s Eventim Apollo. Of course, the cast pulled out their best Wakanda-inspired outfits to strut down the, in this case, ‘black’ carpet but Kasumba especially ticked all the right boxes in the style department.
The 41-year-old looked sensational in a dress designed by Jenny Packham, who is best known for regularly styling the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton. The exquisite creation features a semi-sheer overlay with delicate slashes in the long-sleeves, adorned with red and pink petals gathered heavily across the torso and cascading gently towards the bottom. Kasumba’s bold make-up and perfectly shaved buzz cut finished the show-stopping look.
While she fittingly chose a British designer for the London premiere, Kasumba proudly wore South African designer David Tlale for the Los Angeles red carpet event. Praising the actress, Tlale said: “Florence is an amazing actor and I am honoured that she asked for me. This is an exciting moment not only for me but for African fashion.
“It fits her body like a glove. She was so excited to receive it and when she did the fitting in Berlin on Saturday, they Facetimed me and it looked beyond phenomenal. You can never go wrong with a black dress on the red carpet. We wanted to give Florence a timeless look and favourite colour is black – a perfect match.”
Who is Florence Kasumba?
If you’re not familiar with Kasumba and her work, it’s certainly the right time to get acquainted as she will be a regular face on your cinema screens in the coming year.
The Ugandan-German actress played Senator Acantha in 2017’s Wonder Woman and will return to the Marvel universe by reprising her Black Panther character, Ayo, in Avengers: Infinity War in May. Perhaps even more exciting, Kasumba will also voice Shenzi in The Lion King live-action remake in 2019 alongside Beyonce and Donald Glover.
