It’s not even Valentine’s Day yet but Idris Elba is in the mood of love already. The Luther actor has gotten engaged to his girlfriend, Sabrina Dhowre, after getting down on one knee and proposing at a screening of his new film, Yardie.
Elba, 45, hosted a preview of his debut directorial project on Saturday morning (10th February) at Rio cinema in London.
It was already a momentous occasion for Elba who was celebrating his first feature film, but the day became even more memorable for Dhowre, 29. In video photo shot by a guest, Elba can be seen down on one knee before a tearful Dhowre rushes to embrace him, clearly accepting his proposal.
A spokesperson for Elba confirmed the news, saying: “She said yes and there was much clapping and cheering.”

Although the couple are yet to personally announce their engagement, the exciting news quickly began to spread on social media with some guests at the screening spilling the beans.
Tolulope Ogunmefun, also known as comedian Don’t Jealous Me, tweeted: “In other news I just witnessed my bro @idriselba propose 2 Wifey eyyyyyyy.”
Ogunmefun added on his Instagram account alongside a photo with Elba: “So just left the Yardie screening .. you lot yea.. when I say the film this amazing.. not just saying that cah I’m in it .. shout out 2 the big bro @idriselba bad boy producer! And he also proposed 2 his wifey today .. was glad 2 witness it.”
Rio cinema, located in Dalston, also announced: “Another @Riocinemafirst! Still 5 days to Valentines Day but @idriselba went down on one knee and proposed to his girlfriend live on stage this morning before a preview of his film #Yardie.”
Elba began dating the Canadian model in early 2017 but they were first pictured together in Manchester in August.
Confirming their romance, Elba told People TV: “It definitely got noticed because I try to keep my personal life private. I think it’s an interesting space, especially for her because she’d never done a red carpet before and I tend not to do that. It was nice actually, she’s from Canada so she felt at home.”
News of the engagement may come as a surprise to some given Elba recently said he was unlikely to tie the knot again after two failed marriages. The Wire star was married to Hanne “Kim” Norgaad from 1999 to 2003, while his marriage to Sonya Nicole Hanklin lasted less than a year in 2006.
Elba is also father to 16-year-old daughter, Isan, whom he shares with Norgaad, and three-year-old son, Winston, with ex-girlfriend Naiyana Garth.
Yardie, is about a young Jamaican man who arrives in London in the 1980s and discovers the man who assasinated his well-respected brother in Jamaica 10 years earlier. The movie, starring Aml Ameen, is set for release on
