Fans of superstar Janet Jackson are not to be messed with. On the same day that Justin Timberlake will headline the Super Bowl halftime show, the singer’s supporters have managed to get the hashtag, #JanetJacksonAppreciationDay, trending on Twitter.
Of course, there is a deeper meaning to the social media trend. During the 2004 halftime performance, Jackson, 51, suffered an infamous wardrobe malfunction when Timberlake, 37, accidentally exposed her nipple.
At the time, Jackson received the brunt of the blame while Timberlake seemed to emerge unscathed. CBS, the network which aired the NFL event, was charged $550,000 by the Federal Communications Commission over the incident.
Many had hoped Jackson would join Timberlake on-stage to correct the former scandal after an NFL spokesperson denied previous rumours she was banned from the event.
However, Jackson stated she would not appear as a surprise guest, writing on Instagram: “To put to rest any speculation or rumours as to whether I will be performing at the Super Bowl tomorrow; I will not. Thank you for your support and I do look forward to seeing you all very soon.”
Needless to say, Jackson’s fans are behind the singer and have expressed their support using the #JanetJacksonAppreciation tag. Many are celebrating Jackson’s talents and achievements while also sharing their favourite Janet Jackson songs, including I Get Lonely, Again and Love Will Never Do (Without You).
One fan gushed: “Im going thru this hashtag liking so many tweets of Janet’s ICONIC projects. So many great moments that span DECADES. LEGEND.”
Another joked: “On this glorious #JanetJacksonAppreciationDay I want to THANK whoever started this Petty party! You are appreciated!”
Timberlake’s anticipated halftime show performance has been mired in controversy. The SexyBack hitmaker faced backlash after reports claimed he would be performing with a hologram of Prince, despite the late singer publicly sharing his disdain for such projections.
