Sza enlisted Solange Knowles to direct The Weekend visuals

Sza has finally released the music video for her popular single The Weekend after months of anticipation but the response has been somewhat unexpected.

Directed by Solange Knowles, the artistically stunning visuals are bookended with the extract: “One opted out, an imbalance of power, shifted the whole tide, it waved and waved.”

The next three minutes are comprised mostly of Sza, 27, delivering a performance art of sorts, dancing seductively in various locations such as a balcony and car park.

There is no denying Sza looks incredible and Knowles deserves credit for her artistic vision. However, many concede that the visuals simply do not match the lyrical content of the song.

The Weekend sees Sza tell the story of two or multiple women – the main and side chick – dating the same man and having to divide his time.

It seems fans were hoping for a big production and conceptual music video to accompany the essence of the song.

One particularly disappointed fan commented on Twitter: “You can tell Solange produced The Weekend video bruh. I AM DISAPOINTED! I wanted some scenes I wanted to see her sneaking around with some random dude. I wanted some chair dances. What is going on. I waited since JUNE 9TH 2017 for a Cranes In the Sky remix video ????? BLOWN [sic].”

Another chimed in: “The Weekend video wasn’t bad it just didn’t make sense for SZA. It was very Solange. And that’s fine.”

However, one unapologetic critic stated: “Solange you ruined the weekend music Video.”

The Weekend features on Sza’s debut album CTRL

The Weekend appears on Sza’s debut studio album CTRL, which dropped in June and has received much critical-acclaim. While 2017 was a huge year for the neo-soul singer, 2018 looks set to be bigger as Sza is nominated for an impressive five awards at the Grammys 2018. These are: Best New Artist, Best Urban Contemporary Album, Best R&B Performance for The Weekend, Best R&B Song and Best Rap/Sung Performance.
