Netflix to pick up cancelled Being Mary Jane?

Being Mary Jane fans will find out how the news anchor’s story ends in 2018

Gabrielle Union has announced the devastating news that her TV series, Being Mary Jane, is cancelled. However, it may not be over for the hit BET show as fans are now pleading with streaming service Netflix to pick up the series.

Union, 44, took to Instagram on Wednesday (11 October) to confirm that Being Mary Jane will come to an end in 2018 with a two-hour series finale movie. The surprise announcement comes just two weeks after season four aired its final episode in September.

In her heartfelt message to fans, Union, who has played the eponymous protagonist since 2013, said: “We have all worked so tirelessly to bring you a show that we could be proud to be a part of. Mary Jane has become my favorite character. We’ve screwed up together, laughed together, evolved together, and raised hell together.”

She continued: “I love all her imperfections, and through playing her I became more forgiving of others who are imperfect and on the journey of self discovery and improvement. We watched her struggle with relationships with both men and women, and we watched her finally start to get her shit together. But the journey isn’t over yet. We, as a Being Mary Jane family, cannot wait to bring you this final 2 hour series finale movie that will answer all your questions about each and every character.”

Fans immediately suggested other networks which could continue Mary Jane Paul’s story, including one who offered: “Netflix should just pick up and continue the Being Mary Jane series @netflix.”

Sharing a similar sentiment, another disappointed fan said: “Netflix where y’all at?!? The audience can’t live w/o Being Mary Jane – work ya magic.”

One other chimed in: “Upset Being Mary Jane was cancelled. Netflix should pick it up.”

Season four of Being Mary Jane featured a recurring appearance from Michael Ealy who played the news anchor’s Good Day USA nemesis turned lover and possibly fiance.

What’s next for Gabrielle Union? Actress has played Mary Jane Paul since 2013

Being Mary Jane hit headlines in 2016 when it emerged that Union was suing BET for $3m over a breach of contract. Union argued that the network reneged on an agreement to film a maximum of 13 episodes per season so she could focus on her movie career commitments. In December 2016, it was reported that Union and BET had settled the lawsuit.

In Union’s cancellation announcement, she told her Instagram followers: “More than anything, however, we want to thank you with every fiber of our being for faithfully watching the show and supporting our work… from the actors, writers, producers, directors and enormous crew over the years, we are humbled and we remain grateful. Thank you!”

Should Netflix continue Being Mary Jane or are you over the story?
